어쩌다 보니 올해 읽은 책 중 단 한 권에 대해서만 감상문을 작성했다. 지금까지 총 열여섯 권밖에 읽지 않았음까지 고백하자면 참 부끄러울 따름이다. 특히 5월 말에 쳤던 독일어 시험 이후로 지적 림보 상태에서 벗어나지 못하고 있다. 발등에 불 떨어진 채로 5월 한 달을 그야말로 독일어 공부로 불태워 버려서인지 단거리 '쾌속' 질주의 결승선을 통과하고 나서는 기록에도 연연하지 않고 최대한 나태하게 생활했달까나. 그러한 몹쓸 짓으로 심신의 안정을 취한 지도 벌써 두 달이 다 돼 간다. 그렇기에 나는 지금 이 글에서 공표하는 바다. 오늘을 기점으로 다시 적당히 생산적으로 살아가겠다고 선언한다. 동일선상에서 올해 상반기에 읽었던 책들을 완독한 순서대로 나열하고, 이전 게시글에서만큼은 아니지만 - 애초에 그렇게 쓰니까 점점 글 한 편에 대한 부담만 커지면서 조금 끄적이다 이내 모든 문단을 삭제해 버리는 악습관이 고착된 것 같다. - 간략하게나마 후기를 남기고자 한다.

 

여담이지만, 군생활 목표 중 하나가 2023년 한 해 동안 책 50권 읽기인데, 퍽이나 가능해 보인다.

 

1. Ishiguro, Kauzo. When We Were Orphans

Ishiguro, Kazuo. <When We Were Orphans>. Vintage, 2000.

Rating: ★★☆

Rationale: I had pride in being a huge fan of Ishiguro. Indeed, I had launched an Ishiguro marathon to not demonstrate to others that I hold this and that much affection towards the author but from unaffected admiration for his writing. Long before he won the Nobel prize, Ishiguro was already well known for his delicate style, which successfully delineates the most subtle ambience and the innermost feelings eclipsed by the human tendency to reconstruct the world according to his bias. The distinctive prose style is well preserved in the writer's fifth novel, which follows the narrative of the detective protagonist. Yet, besides the clarity and beauty of each line, the novel affords its readers a meagre reading experience. Set in the first half of the last century, it goes back and forth between the UK and Shanghai as Christopher Banks, the main character, blends his childhood memories with current affairs. As implied from the setting, it is a historical novel to some extent. I would have better understood the plot if I were equipped with preliminary knowledge about Shanghai International Settlement and the Sino-Japanese wars. However, as if to literally embody the motif that dominates Ishiguro's oeuvre, every event narrated lacks veracity. Simply put, Banks is an utterly unreliable narrator. That itself does not raise a question of Ishiguro's competence since the device has been deliberately implemented. It achieved its purpose of awakening us to the often-neglected fact that men, no matter how clever and shrewd, always make numerous mistakes and hardly acquiesce in the solid bricks of objectivity once he is rooted to his own cause. The problem occurs in character development. Even if each character is intended to be flawed, the author should at least provide clear foundation from which the audience can build the general image of the characters, further deducting the why questions of their action. In regards to that, Ishiguro has done poorly. The only constant impression that I had of Banks was his haughtiness. Moreover, as a reader from a country Imperial Japan had colonised, the blurry distinction between good and evil in the Settlement turned out too uneasy. I am not saying that since Japan capitalised on its neighbouring countries, there could not exist any good Japanese citizens during that era. Instead, I doubt if Ishiguro, although he is British and was raised British, as a writer who occasionally incorporates his Japanese lineage, ever thought about progressing towards the direct acknowledgement of the inhumane deeds done by his ancestors. Sure, the novel's theme is quite fixed on the imperfect nature of human beings - or memory. Nonetheless, I felt the very theme eventually obfuscates who's the prey and predator. Despite the limitations of our capacity to remember or record, certain things cannot and shall not change. And those are called facts, often dismissed by novelists.

2. 오르한 파묵, <새로운 인생>

오르한 파묵. <새로운 인생>. 민음사, 2000.

평점: ★★★☆

이유: 사실... 기억이 잘 안 난다. 그런데도 평점을 매길 수 있는 것은 아마 완독한 직후에 '흐음... 무슨 내용인지 잘은 모르겠지만, 심오하고 나름 괜찮네...' 라고 음미했던 기억은 선명하기 때문이다. 그리고 더욱 분명하게 위의 가즈오 이시구로의 소설보다는 훨씬 멋스러운, 노벨 문학상 수상자의 품위가 느껴지는 책이라고 생각했으므로 별 하나를 더했다. 적어도 이 책을 읽고 다시는 오르한 파묵의 작품을 읽지 않겠다고 결심하기보다 반대로 그의 대표작인 <내 이름은 빨강>까지 구매했으므로 평점의 절반은 먹고 들어가지 않나 싶다. 그래도 간략한 감상도 남기지 못하는 현상태를 비추어 보건대 다시 읽어야만 할 것 같다. 그래도 일단 뇌리에 남은 내용을 긁어 모아 보자. 오스만이라는 이름의 주인공은 이스타불 공대 건축학과에 재학 중이고, "어느 날 한 권의 책을 읽"고 "인생이 송두리째 바뀌었다." 그 문제의 책을 읽은 사람은 오스만뿐만이 아니다. 그가 재에 불이 붙듯 갑자기 사랑하게 된 자난이라는 동급생도, 또 다른 동급생이자 그녀의 남자친구인 메흐메트도, 삼순이라는 지방 도시의 어느 의사도 그 책을 읽었다. 그리고 모두 '새로운 인생(Yeni Hayat)'을 동경하며 길을 나섰다. 어디서 어디로 향하는 길인지는 정해져 있지 않다. 다만, 그들은 메흐메트의 아버지인 나린 박사의 비밀결사 단체를 피해 다니며 지금까지 그들이 살았던 삶과는 완전히 다른 인생을 지향한다. 정처도 없이 떠돌어다닌다. 그러다가 수없이 많은 죽음을 목격하고, 도모하고, 체험한다. 새로운 인생을 꿈꾸는 자들의 천사는 오로지 피범벅이 된 도로 위 교통사고 현장에만 강림한다. 주인공 오스만도 한때 새로운 인생을 찾으러 아나톨리아의 각지를 배회하다 고향인 이스탄불로 귀환해 한 여자의 남편이 되고, 한 여자아이의 아버지가 되지만, 결국 '새로운 인생(Yeni Hayat)'이라는 상표의 옛날 사탕의 제조자를 추적하고 돌아오는 길에 천사를 만나고 마침내 새로운 인생에 발을 디딘다. 그렇지만 그는 더 이상 새로운 인생을 원하지 않았다. 그렇게 소설은 끝난다. 이 책의 모든 것이 모호하다. 혹시 튀르키예 역사를 공부했다면 더 수월하게 읽혔을까? 외지인으로서 그 의미를 알기 어려운 은유가 흘러 넘치다 못해 한 줄기 강을 이룬다. 파묵의 시적 문체는 해당 작품이 소설인지 무수히 많은 산문시의 집합인지 헛갈리게 한다. 드문드문 삽입된 인물들간의 대화가 가까스로 작품의 장르를 상기시킨다. 파묵은 치밀하게 오스만의 심리를 묘사함으로써 독자와 서술자의 정신적 합일을 준비하지만, 애석하게도 튀르키예인의 정체성이 완전히 결여된, 튀르키예와 접점이라고는 한 움큼도 없는 나에게는 전혀 성사되지 못했다. 그럼에도 불구하고 파묵의 뛰어난 서술력으로 말미암아 한 번도 가본 적 없는 튀르키예 동부 아나톨리아의 험준한 바위 산맥들 한가운데서 외로이 파아란 하늘을 둘로 나누며 유유히 제 갈길을 찾아 나서는 독수리의 광경을 나는 저절로 떠올렸다. 아타튀르크의 정신을 잇는 전통주의자와 그에 대립해 미국을 위시한 서구 문명을 자연스럽게 체화해 '새로운 인생'을 설파하는 세력의 병렬은 그야말로 작가 본인이 소설을 집필할 당시 저리도록 체감한 튀르키예의 현실을 반영한다.
